Your eye movements can give you away more often than you know

Your eye movements can give you away more often than you know
Tiny eye movements may reveal whether a person is lying about recognising someone they know, claims a new study.
The finding could be valuable to police when trying to confirm key identities in criminal networks such as terrorist cells or gangs, researchers said.
Using eye tracking technology, researchers from the University of Portsmouth in the UK found that people’s eyes move in a different pattern when looking at faces they recognise.
“Criminal accomplices often deny that they know other members in their networks. However, if a co-conspirator denies recognition in this way, their eye movements when viewing photos of those suspects, may reveal this type of lie,” said Ailsa Millen, lead author of the study.
The researchers recorded the eye movements of 59 participants while looking at 200 digital colour photographs of familiar and unfamiliar faces.
Familiar faces included people the participants knew in real life, famous celebrities and those only seen briefly before the experimental trials. Sometimes the participants lied about whether they recognised the photos, sometimes they told the truth.
“We found that people’s eye movements were different when looking at photographs of faces they knew well compared to those they did not know, despite verbal reports denying recognition.

Kenya on Friday unveiled meningitis vaccine as the debilitating bacterial disease threatens to break out in the country’s northern counties amid biting drought.
The new meningitis vaccine called “Nimenrix” was developed by Pfizer, an American pharmaceutical giant and will bolster efforts to eradicate the highly infectious disease that is rampant in Kenya and 26 other Sub-Saharan Countries.
Meningitis has so far killed nearly 300 people in Nigeria in the last few weeks. Experts say Nigeria has been hit by a new strain of the disease, which has no commercially available vaccine.
Deshnee Achary, the head of Pfizer Vaccines in the Anglophone region, said Kenya became the first country in the region to benefit from a meningitis vaccine that was developed after rigorous scientific research.
“Vaccination is a critical intervention in healthcare like clean water.
“The meningitis vaccine will therefore offer long-term immunity against the disease to high risk populations,” Achary said.
Kenya has recorded sporadic Meningitis outbreaks fuelled by droughts and displacement of populations in the northern frontier districts.
Achary noted that Kenya’s vulnerability to a meningitis outbreak remained higher in the light of escalating drought and influx of refugees from endemic and strife torn neighboring countries.
“Any meningitis outbreak in Africa coincides with drought hence the need for Kenyan authorities to take proactive measures like mass vaccination, hygiene education and intensive surveillance at border crossings,” said Achary.
She added that a partnership with the ministry of health will facilitate distribution of the Meningitis vaccine to the high risk counties.
The Nimenrix Meningitis vaccine that was approved by global regulatory agencies five years ago has proved to be an effective tool of containing the bacterial disease which impairs physical and neurological functions of patients.
Dr Ombeva Malande, Director of East African Centre for Vaccines and Immunisation said the Nimenrix vaccine has over 90 per cent efficacy and will embolden other clinical interventions to manage the disease.
“Vaccinating people suppresses the meningitis bacteria to ensure it does not develop to fatal stages. Available data indicates Nimemrix vaccine has met the threshold of safety and efficacy,” said Malande.
Kenya belongs to the Meningitis Belt that comprises 27 Sub-Saharan African countries.
The World Health Organisation contends that 1.2 million new cases of Meningitis leading to 135,000 deaths are reported annually across the globe.(Xinhua/NAN)

U.K Nurse sacked for discussing Christianity & offering to pray with patients before operations

Sister Sarah Kuteh, a nurse with 15 years’ experience was sacked for discussing Christianity and offering to pray with patients before their operations. Kuteh, who's a mother-of-three, was dismissed for breaching guidelines, even though her job involved asking people preparing for surgery about their religion.

Recalling how she was suspended and escorted from Darent Valley hospital in Dartford, Kent, Kuteh said: ‘It was embarrassing for me – and painful after all I had done in my years as a nurse. I was told I couldn’t even speak to my colleagues. All I had done was to nurse from my heart. How could it be harmful to tell someone about Jesus?’

She admitted she may have spoken to a few patients without their express permission when she first began the job, but was more careful after a warning in April 2016 that there had been complaints. In June, She was ‘shocked’ when they told her that three further complaints had been made, after which she was told to stop assessing patients and was suspended a few days later. She was sacked in August after an investigation, and her appeal rejected.

The bosses at Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust however insist that her discussions were unwanted and this had upset patients. They also claim that Kuteh failed to heed warnings that she was being unprofessional.

She is now suing the hospital for unfair dismissal, describing her sacking as ‘disproportionate and punitive’.

There will be no famine in Nigeria in 2017- FG says

The Federal Government has allayed the fear in some quarters that the country would experience famine in 2017, assuring of sufficient mechanisms to achieve food security in the country.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Audu Ogbeh, gave the assurance at an interactive session with journalists in Abuja yesterday.

The Minister said the Federal Government had engaged in the buying- back of assorted grains under the Guarantee Minimum Price Programme for restocking of strategic silo complexes which he put at 33 in number with a total capacity of 2.5 million tons of grains.

He disclosed that farmers in some states of the federation had  already commenced preparation for the dry season farming to ensure adequate food security across the country adding that government was poised to make farming an all-year round business by creating dams and lakes in every part of the country to support irrigation system. He noted that crops thrive and yield better through the irrigation system.
“Nigerians have no reason to panic, we have made arrangement for some states to start planting so that we have second crops by April”he said
Ogbeh disclosed that Nigeria had signed an agreement with the government of Morocco on fertilizer production which would yield one million tons of fertilizer through local production in order to boost food production in the country. He reaffirmed that the introduction of soil-specific fertilizer application developed by the Ministry would also go a long way in increasing high crop yield in the country.

He revealed that 30,000 slots allocated to the Ministry under the N- power scheme of the Federal Government would be trained through the Agricultural Development Programmes (ADPs) as Agric. extension workers who will serve in their respective local government areas.

He added that the Ministry had acquired 110 various capacities of rice mills of 10 tons, 20 tons, 50 tons and 100 tons per day for distribution to cluster farmers to boost rice production and milling capacity in the country as a way of attaining food sufficiency.

The Minister admitted that in the history of Nigeria, the country was witnessing strong purchase of grains from as far as Namibia and other countries which signal a challenge; as well as being beneficial to Nigerian farmers to who now have a good market for their farm produce. He assured that market forces would be stabilized through an increase in local production of food commodities.
