bangladesh clears execution for top extremist leader

bangladesh clears execution for top extremist leader

The Supreme Court upheld a 2008 order to execute Mufti Abdul Hannan and two associates for an attack on a shrine that left three dead and injured the British high commissioner at the time.
Bangladesh’s highest court Sunday rejected the final appeal by a top extremist leader tooverturn his death sentence, all but paving the way for his execution within weeks.
The Supreme Court upheld a 2008 order to execute Mufti Abdul Hannan and two associates for an attack on a shrine that left three dead and injured the British high commissioner at the time.
The decision comes just weeks after armed militants attempted to free Hannan in a daring ambush as police transferred the high-profile extremist between prisons.

The appeal dismissal leaves Hannan and his associates no further legal avenues to escape the gallows and they could be hanged within a week, said Attorney General Mahbubey Alam.
“They can still beg for their lives to the president,” he told AFP, though there is no such precedent of an Islamist extremist being granted clemency in Bangladesh.
The trio were sentenced to death for masterminding a 2004 grenade attack that killed three and injured scores more, including then British high commissioner (ambassador) Anwar Choudhury.
It was among the most high-profile attacks orchestrated by the Harkat-ul Jihad Al Islami (HuJI) group, headed by Hannan, across Bangladesh in the mid-1990s.
By the time Hannan was arrested in late 2005 more than 100 people had been killed in attacks by HuJI on a church, secular gatherings and mosques used by Islam’s minority sects.
His supporters attempted to free their influential leader in early March by hurling hurl bombs at police vans transporting Hannan, but failed to secure his release.
Bangladesh has suffered a spate of attacks on secular activists, foreigners and religious minorities in recent years.
Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group have claimed responsibility in some cases but Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s secular government has pinned the blame on local outfits.
Islamic State claimed responsibility Saturday for a suicide bomb attack on a Bangladesh security forces camp, while police in Dhaka shot dead a suspected militant in a separate incident.
Police have arrested scores of suspected extremists and killed more than 50 people since an attack on a Dhaka cafe last year that left 22 dead.

Four people were killed on Saturday evening when suicide bombers blew themselves up in a village on the outskirts of Maiduguri city in Nigeria, police said.
Borno state police spokesman Victor Isuku said the incident occurred when three bombers — a man and two women — tried to enter Umarari village just outside Maiduguri. “They detonated the IEDs (improvised explosive devices) strapped to their bodies while running to different directions,” Isuku said.
Among the dead was a local vigilante and a woman and her two children, he said. Another eight people were wounded. Ibrahim Abdulkadir, spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said the vigilante had tried to prevent the bombers from entering the village.

“The vigilante was trying to stop them and that was when he was engulfed by the bomb and the woman was nearby,” Abdulkadir explained. The three bombers also died in the blasts, he said.
The Borno state capital of Maiduguri is the birthplace of Boko Haram, a radical Islamist group that has killed over 20,000 people and forced 2.6 million from their homes since taking up arms against the Nigerian government in 2009.
The violence has triggered a dire humanitarian crisis in northeast Nigeria and the wider Lake Chad region, which has also been hit by the conflict.
Nigerian troops, with the help of regional forces from Cameroon, Chad and Niger, as well as Benin, have since early 2015 managed to claw back most of the territory lost to Boko Haram in 2014.
But despite claims from the Nigerian military that the group is on the verge of defeat, suicide bomb attacks remain a threat to civilians, particularly in Maiduguri. Boko Haram’s elusive leader Abubakar Shekau made his first appearance in months last week, claiming responsibility for a spate of suicide bombings.

Policeman killed as troops foil Boko Haram attack in Borno

Policeman killed as troops foil Boko Haram attack in Borno
Nigeria Police
Army alleges community connivance
Troops of 8 Task Force Division of Operation Lafiya Dole have foiled a Boko Haram attack on Magumeri town in Borno State.
The armed insurgents, according to residents, attempted to set the town ablaze.
Magumeri is a council headquarters, and 40 kilometres north of Maiduguri, the state capital.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brig-Gen. Sani Usman told reporters in Maiduguri yesterday that: “The timely intervention of the troops prevented the mishap that could have led to massive loss of lives and property.”

The Borno State Commissioner of Police, Damian Chukwu, however confirmed that one of his men, Haliru Aliyu was killed while Lawrence Ayeni was wounded in the attack.
The two police officers were on a special duty along with the military in foiling the attacks.
Chukwu said that the military reinforcement from Damasak also engaged the fleeing terrorists and recovered a Hilux vehicle mounted with anti-aircraft gun.
Meanwhile, the Nigeria Army has said that Magumeri residents are complicit and in active connivance with the terrorists since the menace began.
A statement in Abuja by Usman said preliminary investigation conducted so far indicates that the assailants are members of that community, as they are well known by the residents.
Usman said this is the first time the terrorists are attacking the community since the menace of attacking and over running communities started in 2009. No member of the community has exposed any resident of involvement with Boko Haram even though, some of the residents are known members of the sect.
While troops are still consolidating and mopping up, it is imperative to state that preliminary investigation shows that the attackers of Magumeri came from the same community.
“It should also be noted that the village was never attacked throughout the period of the insurgency for some inexplicable reasons. The terrorists and their collaborators hibernating in the area were never exposed. There seems to be unholy alliance between the terrorists and the villagers,” Usman said.
A military source told The Guardian that the community residents are actively involved such that they know members of the sect.
“The community obviously has been housing members of the sect, but they have never deemed it fit to report the presence of the terrorists in their community.’’
“It is a grievous mistake and criminal offence to continue to shield or harbour any known Boko Haram terrorist in their midst.’’
However, the state Deputy Governor, Usman Durkwa yesterday said the Boko Haram insurgents specifically attacked the Magumeri military base and the police station, without “torching any house or killing residents.’’
He also denied that the insurgents and affected community connived to attack the military base and police station.

South West Hausa leaders, AYF warn against reprisal attacks over Ife crisis

South West Hausa leaders, AYF warn against reprisal attacks over Ife crisis

Another account said the two communities were fighting over a married woman who had been married to an Hausa man but was having an affair with a Yoruba man.
The leaders of Hausa communities in the southwest have warned their kinsmen in the north not to attack the Yoruba community over the recent bloody clash in Ife, Osun State.
The warning was given by the SarkinShasha and head of Arewa community in the 17 southern states, HarunaMaiyasin, at his palace in Shaha, Ibadan, Oyo State.
According to the Seriki Hausa in the six states, the warning became necessary not to destroy the cordial relationship that had existed between the two tribes over the years.

The meeting resolved that the traditional and business Hausa-Fulani leaders in Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Osun, Ondo and Ekiti States must travel to their states of origin to dousethe people’s tension.
They also warned those behind the crisis to desist in the interest of peace and unity in the country.
Maiyasin explained: “The meeting was called to brainstorm on how to ensure that the cordial relationship among Yoruba and Arewa community would not be destroyed.
“The two tribes have inter-married and have many things in common. We should not allow the clash to disrupt the peace in the land. The Yoruba are not against the Hausa or Fulani. We should take what happened in good faith.”
Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola, who was represented by his Senior Special Assistant on Arewa Matters, Muhammed Bashir Hussein, condoled with the Hausa community.
He explained that the Yoruba were not hostile to them because during the fierce Ife-Modakeke war that claimed many lives, no Hausa or Fulani person was killed. We should not allow intruders to destroy the cordial relationship that we are enjoying among ourselves.”
The Olowu of Kuta and Chairman, Council of OwuObas, Oba Hammed Adekunle Oyelude Tegbosun III, promised that the traditional institution would work with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that such a clash “does not occur again.”
Also, the Arewa Youth Forum (AYF) yesterday appealed to northerners not to avenge the killing of the Hausa in Ife.
The group’s President, Gambo Ibrahim Gujungu made the appeal after their meeting in Kaduna.
Gujungu urged the Federal Government to prosecute those found culpable in the dastardly act, which he described as an “act of lawlessness and rascality which has no place in a democracy.”
He said the prosecution of culprits was necessary to serve as a deterrent to others who might want to resort to violence in resolving their grievances.
He promised that the forum would seek dialogue to protect the Hausa community and their property anywhere they reside in the country.

Photos: Suspected assassins kill former Edo council Chairman

The former Chairman of Etsako-East Local Government Council in Edo State, Prince Suleiman Afegbua was killed by unknown gunmen on Thursday, March 15th. Preliminary reports indicate that the assailants, thought to be assassins, on the Benin-Auchi road, allegedly attacked Suleiman Afegbua, who was on his way to Benin.

According to a family member, Prince Malik Afegbua, the late council boss was in his Prado jeep with three other occupants when the assailants attacked him while the others escaped with injuries.
Confirming the incident, spokesman for the Edo State Police Command, DSP Moses Nkonmbe, said two of the three injured are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

He said that the command had deployed officers from the Anti-kidnapping Unit and other relevant units to comb for possible arrest of the culprits.

Late Afegbua was buried today according to Islamic rites. Meanwhile, Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki has expressed shock and sadness over the alleged assassination.

The Governor, while condemning, in strong terms, the dastardly act, urged security operatives in the state to immediately swing into action, unravel those behind the act and bring them to justice.
Meanwhile, the visibly miffed governor, who received the news in company of his Deputy, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, described late Suleiman as a progressive, peaceful and hardworking council Chairman, while promising that government will do what it needs to do to apprehend the culprits of this heinous crime and bring them to book.
“This is wicked and mindless”, Governor Obaseki said.
Continuing, Governor Obaseki noted that the incident was an ugly stain on the government’s drive to completely rid the state of violence and re-orientate the people towards imbibing the culture of reliance on the judiciary alone in resolution of real or perceived conflicts.
"Let me make it clear to the perpetrators that they have not only tested and affronted the government’s will to rid the state of men of the underworld among whom they belong, but that they have also tested the collective will of the people of Edo State." he said.
On what steps have been taken to apprehend the culprits, the governor revealed that an investigative panel would be set up to work with the police towards unravelling the identities of those directly and indirectly connected to this cowardly act.
“The Government hereby assures the public of its resolve never to rest until the perpetrators are apprehended and the punishment the law holds out for the crime of murder administered to them as soon as possible”, he said.
Meanwhile, he also urged Afegbua’s family and the people of Etsako remain progressive and not relent in pursuing development in the area.
"The government shares this harrowing moment with you. May he rest in the boundless peace of the Lord, and may his family find the grace and strength to bear his loss. May the people of Etsako also find the will to move on and continue in his progressive footsteps to develop the area."

Photos: Troops arrest two Boko Haram terrorists in Borno, one pretends to be deaf and dumb

Troops of the Nigerian Army on Operation LAFIYA DOLE have continued with clearance operations on suspected Boko Haram terrorists locations through patrols, ambushes and raids with appreciable progress in their respective areas of responsibility.
These efforts have led to arrest, interception and neutralizing of quite a number of Boko Haram terrorists, as well as recovery of arms, ammunition and equipment. The essence is to ensure security in the areas and prevent infiltration by Boko Haram terrorists among the communities.

It is as regards to this that troops of 159 Task Force Battalion arrested a suspected Boko Haram terrorist, one Mallam Makinta Ibrahim aged 45 years at Bayemari Wednesday, March 15th. The suspect who hailed from Yaro Grematalti Yunusari Local Government Area. He was also confirmed to be Premium Motor Spirit and other logistic items to the terrorists.
The troops also arrested another suspected Boko Haram terrorist whose name, age and origin could not be ascertained for now as he pretend to be deaf and dumb.

However, he was found to be in possession of 8 functioning mobile telephone handsets, bunch of keys, 2 passport photographs, 2 amulet charms and a transistor radio. Both of the suspect are being further investigated.

Photo: 9 key Boko Haram terrorists surrender to troops

Nine high ranking members of Boko Haram terrorists have willingly surrendered to Nigerian troops in Borno State. A statement signed by Brigadier General Sani Usman, Director of Army Public Relations, on Thursday, said that "while some unscrupulous elements in the society are conniving with remnants of Boko Haram terrorists to continue to commit atrocities, the reality is dawning on the terrorists in the northern part of Borno State."

Two days ago, 9 key Boko Haram terrorists from Tambashe village, Dikwa Local Government Area, voluntarily surrendered to troops deployed along Dikwa-Gulumba Gana road.

The suspects claimed to be tired of the situation under the Boko Haram terrorists group and willingly offer themselves to troops as a mark of repentance. Nevertheless, the repentant suspects are further being investigated.

Court sends former NNPC boss, Yakubu, to prison

Court sends former NNPC boss, Yakubu, to prison

The former boss of Nigeria‘s state-run oil company was remanded in custody on fraud charges on Thursday, after nearly $10 million in cash was found at a property he owns.
Andrew Yakubu, the ex-group managing director of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), was charged with money laundering and fraud when he appeared in court in Abuja.
The charges relate to the discovery by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission of $9.8 million (9.2 million euros) and £74,000 ($91,000, 85,000 euros) in cash at a property in the northern city of Kaduna.

He was also charged with failing to make a “full disclosure” of his assets and for unlawfully transporting the cash to the city. He pleaded not guilty.

Judge Ahmed Mohammed, sitting at the federal high court, remanded Yakubu in custody until next Tuesday when he will hear a bail application.
The charges against Yakubu, who ran the NNPC from 2012 to 2014 when Goodluck Jonathan was president, are the latest strike against senior figures in the oil sector.
Former oil minister Diezani Alison-Madueke was recently accused in a separate case of diverting more than $150 million from the NNPC, whose operations have long been considered opaque and corrupt.
President Muhammadu Buhari was elected two years ago vowing to stop the plunder of state funds by corrupt politicians and public officials in the country of 180 million people.
The main opposition party, however, has accused him of conducting a political witch-hunt because many of those arrested and charged are opposition party members or served in the previous administration.

Nigerian government planning to attack us – INM

Nigerian government planning to attack us – INM
The Isilamic Movement in Nigeria has claimed that there are plots by the Nigerian government to attacks its members across the country.
The group said plans had been perfected by some persons believed to bbe working for the FG to unleash terror on its members in northern part of the country.
INM in a statement issued on Thursday by its president, Ibrahim Musa and forwarded to DAILY POST called on the federal government to release its leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife as ordered by the court.
Musa said, “There are credible reports and clear indications that point to deliberate attempts at unleashing mayhem and brutality on members of the Islamic movement in Nigeria (IMN) especially in Kano and other towns.
“Activities of the various arms of the Nigerian security apparatus since the brutal Zaria massacre of December, 2015 have left no one in doubts as to what the ultimate objectives are. We have noticed a recent escalation of plots towards attaining those hidden targets.
“The most recent comments by the Federal government through its Ministry of foreign affairs cannot be taken in isolation. When viewed against the backdrop of recent plots to either invade or attack many of the IMN centres in Sokoto, Katsina, Jos and Kano, it would be clear that there is an upsurge of devilish schemes to forcibly repress members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria through a grand plot to massively attack IMN across the country at the slightest opportunity.
“Not too long ago, a leaked audio recording of a meeting with some notable Wahabi clerics quoted the Kano state governor, Ganduje as telling his audience that he and his government had given the order for the brutal clampdown against IMN members in Kano last October, which claimed the life of tens of innocent citizens.
“Several dozen others including women and children were maimed and bundled into an illegal detention till this moment. We therefore hold him responsible for the bloodshed in Kano. As a matter of fact, we know that most recently a special unit of the Nigerian army has been sent to Kano, in what they termed “an attempt to finish off what the Police couldn’t accomplish” in wiping out members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria in Kano axis.
“We have also observed the efforts being made in certain quarters to instigate an all-out attack on IMN members in the image of Zaria massacre of December 2015. Last week Friday, some unscrupulous people peddled rumours about unfounded claims that members of the IMN were displeased with the return of the President from medical vacation in London. Some went as far as to alleged that he was indeed poisoned or charmed or even possessed by our members.
“The wicked intent was to incite hate and violence against IMN nationwide. This was indeed attempted in vain in very many towns in Northern Nigeria. Recognizing this sinister plot, members of the IMN deliberately refused to be provoked and dragged into the mud. For instance, the planned attack on worshipers at Fagge Juma’at mosque in Kano last week Friday was foiled as IMN members responsibly refused to be lured into the wicked plots that would have caused the death of innocent people.
“Undoubtedly, those behind Zaria massacre are hell bent on extending it to other places, in particular Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Jos, Bauchi and other places with the tacit approval of the various state governments. Bereft of justification, especially with the independent Rights organizations exposing their misdeeds and in the light of their recent losses at the courts, the government appears to once again believe that only violence against the IMN will do. However, those behind these devilish plots are better advised to put such on hold because we have glaringly showed beyond any iota of doubts that violence is not in our character and we do not employ violent means as our modus operandi. The World should note that what the government is scheming through its various security operatives are foot-marks of yet another pogrom about to be unleashed on defenceless citizens.
“Finally, we will like to reiterate our call for the immediate release of our Leader, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky and his wife as ordered by the federal high court sitting in Abuja and hundreds of IMN members languishing in Kaduna Prison. The continued disregard to this court order with impunity is a severe blow to the democratic principles the present administration is claiming to be following.”

Woman defends her son who police accuse of fleeing the scene of a car crash and leaving his elder brother to die

Police are accusing Aidan Camacho, 19, who crashed into a parked car and a tree in Queens, New York, of fleeing the scene and abandoning his brother to die. Aiden's mother, Fernanda Almestica, does not agree with the police that Aidan left his elder brother, Angel Camacho, 21, to die. She denies that Aiden was driving the car which crashed and killed  Angel at 4:15 a.m. on Sunday.
"We are grieving — we lost one son, and we have one son that’s wanted for something he didn’t do," she told the New York Daily News. "My son will be at the precinct today with a lawyer, giving his side of the story, and we have video showing that my son wasn’t driving the car."

According to the police, after the crash, Aidan left the car and his injured brother then hitched a ride to Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, but those who know Aidan say that could not have been possible because his brother was his best friend.
Steven Scordio, who owns the construction company where Angel worked, told the New York Post that Aiden would have given his last breath for his brother.
"Aidan was his younger brother who looked up to Angel like a father. Aidan would have never done that. He would take his last breath for his brother."
He went on:
"I asked Angel, 'What does your brother look like,' and he said, 'He looks like me without the beard.' He said it with pride.

Police report that Aidan was speeding when he crashed just a mile from where they both grew up. He got out of the car and flagged down a passing driver, who took him to the hospital. Firefighters arrived at the scene minutes later and took Angel Camacho who suffered severe head and internal injuries to the hospital where he eventually died. The police are now looking for Aiden who could face manslaughter charges.

Photos of the N49million cash recovery intercepted at Kaduna airport

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFF issued a statement today debunking claims that the N49 million intercepted at Kaduna Airport was a stunt.
The attention of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has been drawn to a report which appeared on page 10 of Thisday Newspaper of Thursday March 16, 2017claiming that the N49million recovered by operatives of the Commission at the Kaduna international Airport on Monday March 13, 2017 was a stunt purportedly intended to sway the senate to confirm Acting Chairman Ibrahim Magu's nomination as EFCC Chairman.

This claim, which the newspaper attributed to ghost sources in the Senate, to say the least, is ludicrous, smacks of mischief and intended to rub in the unfortunate proceedings of March 15 in the Senate, where Magu’s nomination as EFCC Chair was rejected.

Quoting an unnamed Senate source, Thisday reported that “the N49million was allegedly planted by officials of the EFCC at the airport exactly one day to Magu’s screening and confirmation by the Senate to give the semblance of an agency head that was competent and one with a wide dragnet”. It further added that, “we have it on good authority that the N49million was planted by the EFCC to create the impression that Magu is working and a major crime-bursting (sic) czar.”

For the avoidance of doubt, the EFCC is a serious and responsible agency which is not associated with frivolity and could not have engaged in any make-belief scheme to impress anybody. The reputation that the agency has today is built on solid and verifiable evidence of effectiveness in law enforcement that is acknowledged the world over. The record of conviction and recovery of stolen assets which have endeared the EFCC to Nigerians was not built on the quicksand of vain glory.
When the EFCC stormed the suburbs of Kaduna in February and recovered over $9.7million from the home of Andrew Yakubu, a former Group Managing Director of the NNPC, was that a stunt to sway the Senate for confirmation? When the Commission traced, recovered and confiscated $15m and $115m from Patience Jonathan and Diezani Allison Madueke respectively, were those stunts to curry the favour of the Senate?
The tens of billions of naira recovered from military officers, politicians and even newspapers publishers from the $2.1billion arms procurement scandal in the Office of the National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, were those also a stunt?
Only the criminally gullible will not see through the intent of the Thisday rep

3 Nigerians and 4 other Manchester United kiosk workers face jail time after being caught stuffing money down their trousers

7 Manchester United Kiosk workers are facing jail time after they were captured on camera stuffing money down their trousers.

The management installed the peephole cameras at an Old Trafford burger stand after they noticed that the tills were repeatedly down and this helped them catch the employees stealing some of the money.
The employees caught are Anthony Agabaje, Mustafe Belkhair, Fliavio Andrade, Lugman Arogundada, Justino Edmilson, Mwila Bwanga and Olamide Oyawoye. The seven of them, all between 20 - 22 years, were linked to around £600 taken when Old Trafford hosted a rugby league match. In total around £4500 has disappeared.and the young workers have been convicted of theft by their employer.

During the hearing at the Manchester Magistrates Court, Anthony Agabaje, 21, of Folkestone Road West, Clayton, and Mustafa Belkhair, 20, of Beamish Close, Ardwick, denied the allegations brought against them but were found guilty at a trial yesterday.

Lugman Arogundada, 22, of Charlestown Road, Blackley, Mwila Bwanga, 20, of Welbeck Street, Gorton, Olamide Oyawaye, 21, of Elfan Crescent, Sandbach, Justino Edmilson, 22, of Tatton Close, Hazel Grove, and Fliavio Andrade, 22, of Lydford, Rochdale, all pleaded guilty to theft.

It was heard in court that Fliavio Andrade, who was team leader at the kiosk, was at the centre of the scam. After a game between Warrington Wolves and Wigan Warriors at United’s ground on October 8 last year, it was discovered that the tills at the kiosk were £382 short. A full stock check revealed more than £200 of food and drink was missing as well so they analysed the CCTV and discovered what the employers had been up to and got them arrested.

The Prosecutor, Heather Alsop, speaking to the court, said: “There is evidence the defendants took money from the till and put it down their trousers as well as inside blue gloves meant for hygiene. The money was passed around and shared out. It is said Mr Andrade took a cut of that money before the other team members pocketed the remainder.”

Agabaje said he had not stolen any money that what he had been putting down his boxer shorts were a bag of cannabis and two joints and that he was high on the drugs so had no idea what he was doing.  On his part, Belkhair, claimed he had been given a lot of tips and hid them in his trousers because he was afraid of having them confiscated.

All seven will be sentenced at Manchester Crown Court next month.

"No daddy, stop killing mommy" 5-year-old pleads as her father stabs mother to death in South Africa

Five-year-old daughter of murdered Priska Thandeka reportedly witnessed the gruesome murder of her mother by her father, new reports said.
Sebeshi Zacharia Mojela, a security guard allegedly stabbed his 29-year-old girlfriend to death in Commissioner Street, South Africa on February 27. He was charged with murder.

"She apparently kept begging him not to kill her mom and kept saying, 'No daddy, stop killing mommy," said family friend, Raele Labani.
The accused made his second court appearance in Kempton Park Magistrrate’s Court on Tuesday morning, March 14th. Mojela (28) was meant to apply for bail, which he did not.
According to Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS, Mojela chose to abandon his bail application.
“He will remain in custody and the case was postponed to May 4,” Mtshali said.

Chalk and Mojela first met when she was a teenager, during the times she would visit her mom. According to Lambani, Mojela at the time lived with his mother where she worked as a domestic worker in Glen Marais.

By 2007/2008, the bright young Schalk had completed her tuition and was searching for a job.
“She entered a learnership programme with Edcon, during which she performed very well and was hired permanently as a debt collector. She was again recently promoted and was supposed to start working as a manager.”

Lambani also told EXPRESS that the pair were in fact legally married, although Schalk had not changed her surname.
“They married about six or seven years ago. I’m not actually sure if they had a wedding but her (Thandeka’s) mom told me they went to go sign at home affairs in Kempton.”
According to Lambani, Mojela completed a security course after matric and has worked as a security guard since. She says she is still shocked at what happened, as he was not a violent or disrespectful person.
“I really don’t understand what happened. Maybe they had some sort of problem but if they did, she never mentioned anything to us,” she says of the always bubbly Schalk. Thandeka was forever smiling and kind, so we couldn’t tell if she was unhappy or not.”
The last time Lambani and her sister had spoken to Schalk was late Sunday afternoon, the day before she died.
“My sister and her had a normal conversation and she sounded just fine. She was even mentioning that she still owed my sister a lunch date.”
Schalk was buried on Sunday, March 4th, in her hometown Taung in North West.

She took financial care of her mother, who is not permanently employed, as well as her grandparents. Their daughter is currently in the care of her grandmother.
