Notorious Ghanaian prisoner ‘Garkum’ attempts jail break again

Notorious Ghanaian criminal, Johnson
Kombian popularly known as Garkum has
attempted to escape with two of his
accomplice from the Nsawam Medium
Security Prison.

According to report, Garkum
who is currently on death sentence for killing
two police officers in 2010, was said to have
moved from his condemned cell to the main
prison yard together with his two cell mates
around midnight on Sunday November 6th.

The incident prompted the officials to lock
down the Nsawam Medium Security Prison.

Speaking on the attempted jail break, DSP
Courage Atsem, the Eastern Regional Public
Relations Officer of the Ghana Prisons
Service, confirmed the incident, saying
‘What I can confirm is that, there was an
attempted escape last night [Sunday], which
was foiled by the officers on duty. Everybody
is in intact; the Police have started a full
scale investigation into the incident to get
the full details of what occurred.’
The notorious inmate who was sentenced in
October 2010 after he was charged with
murder and conspiracy for killing two police
officers and leaving another injured in the
Nakpanduri area of the Northern region,
initially escaped from the Nsawam Medium
Security Prison and fled to his hometown.

In November 2010, he was re-arrested
through the efforts of INTERPOL, when he
crossed the border at Bunkpurugu-Yunyoo
District to visit his girlfriend on November
19, 2010. On August 19, 2015, Johnson
Kombian was sentenced to death by hanging
on two counts of murder, after a seven-
member jury returned a guilty verdict. He is
also serving a 30-year jail term on the
charge of conspiracy.
